Google is rolling out a new social interaction tool called Plus 1 (+1). The button will start to appear on Search Results and Ads and eventually will roll out to Web Pages too. It allows users to give a vote of approval much in the way that you would ‘Like’ a Facebook page or comment.
The net effect is that when you search using Google, you may see a Plus 1 attached to an Ad or Search Result alongside the name of your friend or contact. Your connections will be based on contacts from your Gmail and Buzz Accounts, eventually integrating Twitter followers too.
Plus 1 will have an impact on Search Results too as users will be offered the option to prioritise recommended sites in their results. Google confirmed that this will start to roll out in the UK over the next few weeks.
The Google Display Network places your ad against contextually relevant content on other people’s sites. To ensure your ad appears against the most relevant pages you need to ensure the structure follows best practice guidelines.
However, many content campaigns are set up poorly (some people don’t even realise they are targeting it!) and are often left to ‘run themselves’. When managed correctly, this network can be a great way of reaching users as well as generating sales.

A recent study by the IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Index suggests that since the beginning of 2011, UK shoppers have spent a staggering £10bn online.
On a year-on-year comparison, the highest sales have come from alcohol, clothing, home and garden and electronics.
However, what’s even more interesting is the fact that 46% of online shoppers spend a lengthy amount of time on Social Media websites conducting research and sharing their findings before they make their purchase.
Retailers are strongly advised to take advantage of these developments, both by becoming more Social Media active and improving their SEO and PPC campaigns.
