It seems that the ‘deregulation’ of legal services in England & Wales might be delayed from the original October 2011 launch date since the Coalition government seems less bothered about it than its predecessor.

Alternative Business Structures (ABS) were earmarked for 6th October 2011 and sounded a warning to Law Firms across the UK that increased competition at competitive pricing would make life a little harder for them, threatening their independence.  The new regulation allows for non-lawyers to take a 25% share of law firms.

Expectation is that companies like Tesco will join the market and utilise their brand to provide legal services in the same way they offer Insurance and Credit Cards, promoted at their checkouts.  Hence the term ‘Tesco Law’.

This impending law change impacts Law Firms that are engaged in Search Engine Marketing as their service markets become much more competitive and the need to stay ahead of the new influx of ABS’s offering Wills ‘willy-nilly’ becomes more prominent.

Search Engine Optimisation takes time to reach fruition, so get started now.  If the law doesn’t go through next October, rumours have it that Scotland may still go ahead with the change, which will see ABS’s being registered north of the border.  You need to be ready.
