A Successful SEO campaign: Part 1

Search Keyboard

We all know how important a good SEO strategy is to the success of a commercial website. But while we recognise the significance of this, many managers simply do not have the time to be as ‘hands on’ as they would like with the process.

With that in mind, in no particular order, here are five tips for getting the most value for your business out of your website’s SEO strategy.

  1. Keyword Strategy:  Ensure your keywords accurately reflect your business

Choose Keywords that are relevant to your business.  Think of what a potential customer would ‘say’ if they needed your product or service.  Use Google’s Keyword Suggestion Tool to help prioritise ‘valuable’ key phrases by Volume, Competitiveness and Current Position.

Keep checking your keyword rankings on a weekly and monthly basis, so you can track your progress.

  1. Tracking:  Use Google Analytics

Free and easy to use, Google Analytics allows you to see visitor data from your website, from the number of visits to the search queries that brought those visitors in the first place.  Furthermore, you can track a variety of actions including Data Capture and even Sales and Revenue.

  1. Research:  Combine PPC data with your SEO strategy

It is much easier to reach the first page of a Google search query using Pay Per Click. The results you get from a PPC campaign will make an excellent starting point for your SEO strategy.

Once your ad text has achieved a high enough quality score to consistently reach the first page on Google, it will become easier to see which keywords generated the most conversions, and introduce these keywords into your SEO strategy.

  1. Foundation:  Install Webmaster Tools

Within your Google Account, set up the Google Webmaster tools, which will make it easy for you to spot any broken links or see what problems Google may be having finding your website pages.

Here you will also be able to upload an XML sitemap, which can be auto generated and will improve the crawlability of your website by the visiting search engine spiders.

  1. Optimise:  Adding your keywords into your Meta Data

Using your Content Management System or adding directly via FTP, ensure that you add your target keywords into your Meta Data.  The way you use Title Tags, Meta descriptions and Header Tags is crucial. Your target keywords must appear here and each Tag must be unique in order to optimise for SEO.  Google, Yahoo and Bing will review Meta Data as part of the algorithm process of ranking your website page against a search query.

These are just five quick tips to help you get started on your SEO journey, and there is still much to be done on top of what we have listed here. Keep watching the Banc Media Blog over the next few weeks for part 2.
